Upcyle Lab: From Waste to Space

The “Building from Waste” workshop provided architecture students with a comprehensive framework for integrating discarded materials into the modern design process. The journey began with a deep dive into the core principles of circularity and sustainability, specifically focusing on the nuances of recycling, upcycling, reclaiming, repurposing, and downcycling. To ground these concepts, students studied the work of relevant practitioners who are currently leading the field in sustainable innovation.

The process then moved into an analysis phase, where students examined assigned waste materials to understand their specific types, internal structures, and potential for reuse. This research served as the foundation for the collaborative design-build phase. Working together, the students transitioned from theory to practice by constructing a full-scale spatial unit.

Through this hands-on involvement, they gained vital experience with physical construction, structural systems, technical detailing, and the real-world behaviour of non-traditional materials. Ultimately, this experiential and transformative learning process enabled the students to develop a significantly more profound understanding of material, fostering a mindset rooted in sustainable design thinking and collaborative teamwork.
