Material !ndeed No:3 Exploring The Timber Structures

The aim of the internship is to support the training of architects who use wood and know the material in order to achieve sustainable architecture that represents the balance between nature and architecture. It is aimed to introduce students to timber structure design and thus increase the use of wood in building construction to reduce the carbon footprint of new buildings. Throughout this hands-on experience, participants will engage in a comprehensive exploration covering design principles, fabrication techniques, and structural testing.
During the internship, design and construction will proceed in parallel as close processes. In the internship, which will be carried out as a team work, students will design and produce pre-determined long span structures to be made of wood at a certain scale. Then, these structures will be subjected to strength tests until they break. Thus, they will explore the most suitable structure or structures for the determined opening.
Within the internship period, on a predetermined day, the factory of a company in the sector that makes various wooden structure applications, will be visited and answers to questions such as how manufacturing occurs on a structural scale, what the equipment is, how the materials are processed will be given on-site.

The outcomes of the Exploring Wood Structures internship include;
– Proficiency in recognizing the types of timber structure,
– Familiarity with cutting-edge wood technologies,
– Understanding of the manufacturing process in the sector,
– Competence in crafting and testing wooden structural components.
