Burcu Balçık, PhD

Dr. Balcik has been doing research in the field of humanitarian operations and disaster management since 2005. She truely enjoys working with practitioners, students and researchers from different disciplines to address different complex problems that arise in humanitarian supply chains and other emergency/disaster contexts. 

Dr. Balcik holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from University of Washington, and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Middle East Technical University. She is a recipient of the Turkish Science Academy’s Young Scientist Award (BAGEP, 2014).

Birce Adsanver

Birce Adsanver

Ph.D. Student in Industrial Engineering

Birce Adsanver has been pursuing her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University since September 2020. She received her M.Sc. (2020) and B.Sc. (2018) degrees in Industrial Engineering from Özyeğin University. Her research interests are in supply chain management, humanitarian logistics, disaster management, and healthcare operations. She is specifically interested in developing mathematical models and heuristic algorithms for difficult optimization problems in these areas.

Cem Bozkır

Cem Bozkır

Ph.D. Student in Industrial Engineering

Cem Bozkır is a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial Engineering program at Ozyegin University, from where he also earned his B.S. (2015) and M.S. (2018) degrees in Industrial Engineering. His doctoral research includes resource planning models for managing chronic patients’ treatments in post-disaster settings. His research interests are mainly in decision-making under uncertainty in the context of humanitarian logistics and healthcare operations. In particular, he is interested in developing integer programming and stochastic modeling approaches for inventory management, resource planning, and transportation problems in these areas.

Lamia Gulnur Kasap

Ph.D. Student in Industrial Engineering

Lamia Gulnur KASAP is a PhD student in Industrial Engineering Department of Ozyegin University since 2016. She has been working as a Research Assistant of Industrial Engineering Department at Istanbul Medipol University since 2015. She holds B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from Sakarya University and a M.Sc. from Marmara University in Istanbul. As non-academic experience, she worked as a quality engineer at Izrek (automotive label company) between 2013-2015.

Lamia’s research interests are mainly on supply chain management and logistic operations. She has been working on humanitarian logistics since her M.Sc. studies. She has focused on various studies on this subject such as debris removal operations, prepositioning, stock sharing, postponement.

Özlem Karadeniz

Özlem Karadeniz

Ph.D. Student in Industrial Engineering

Özlem Karadeniz Alver received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Sabancı University, İstanbul, Turkey, in 2015 and 2018, respectively. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University, İstanbul, Turkey, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Burcu Balçık. She has been working as a Research Assistant of the Industrial Engineering Department at Maltepe University since 2018. Her research interests include food waste, food bank operations and alternative food networks.

Sırma Karakaya

Ph.D. Student in Industrial Engineering

Sırma Karakaya received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Industrial Engineering Program at Bilkent University and METU, in 2014 and in 2017, respectively. Currently, she continues her Ph.D studies at the same department of Ozyeğin University under the supervision of Dr. Burcu Balçık. Her research interests include stochastic programming and their applications to healthcare and humantarian operations.

Berna Akça is an M.Sc. student in Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University. She received her B.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor degree in Computer Science from Özyeğin University. She is the graduate assistant of “Covid-19 Network Technology based Responsive Action” project funded by Norwegian Research Council. Her research interests are humanitarian logistics, supply chain management, mathematical modeling and heuristic methods.

M.Sc. Student in Industrial Engineering

Çağrı Özmemiş received his B.Sc. (2020) degree in Industrial Engineering from Özyeğin University. He is currently a M.Sc. student in Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University and is the graduate assistant of “Capacity Planning for Effective Cohorting of Dialysis Patients during the Coronavirus Pandemic: A Case Study” project conducted by Prof. Burcu Balçık at Özyeğin University. His research interests are humanitarian logistics, disaster management and OR applications in healthcare and nonprofit operations.

Ecem Yücesoy is an M.Sc. student in Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University. She received her B.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor degree in Computer Science from Özyeğin University. Her research interests include humanitarian and healthcare operations, supply chain management, mathematical modeling, optimization, and predictive analytics.

M.Sc. Student in Data Science

Eren Atsız is an M.Sc. student in Data Science at the Özyeğin University. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor degree in Computer Science from Özyeğin University. His primary research interests lie at the intersection of optimization and machine learning as his ultimate vision is to create approaches towards multifaceted problems with the usage of accurate and interpretable models including state-of-the-art analytics methods.

Asena Ayse Gevsek

Asena has been studying Industrial Engineering since 2018 and double majoring in Computer Science at Özyegin University since 2019. Her research interests are education technologies and humanitarian relief systems. Following her graduation, she wants to pursue an academic career and research on providing equal opportunities and required aid to people in need.

Kaan Apak

B.Sc. Student in Industrial Engineering

I study industrial engineering at Özyeğin University and making minor with computer engineering. I have already worked on earthquakes, preparing an evacuation plan and became part of the Kyoto World Tsunami Awareness summit. At the moment, I am working on a project to generate a new system, preventing violence to women and it’s impact.
