Prof Uysal became a Technical Editor of the IEEE VLC standart under preparation

March 2nd, 2015

CT&T Research Group Director Prof Dr Murat Uysal was assigned as a Technical Editor of the IEEE Task Group which will develop a standart on visible light communication, also known as LiFi.

Visible light communication systems take advantage of light emitting diodes (LEDs) which can be pulsed at very high speeds without noticeable effect on the lighting output and human eyes. Dual use of LEDs for illumination and communication purposes is a sustainable and energy-efficient approach and has the potential to revolutionize how we use light. Visible light communication, also known as LiFi, will virtually turn every light bulb into a wireless access point. In current experimental demonstrations, impressive data speeds up to several gigabits per second were achieved with off-the-shelf LEDs. It is envisioned that LiFi will be an indispendable part of future heterogeneous wireless networks as a complementary technology to today’s radio-frequency based cellular and WiFi technologies.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), the same body which develops WiFi standarts, recognized this revolutionary technology and started the Task Group 802.15.7r to prepare a standart on LiFi. At the kick-off meeting held in Atlanta, USA in January 2015, Prof Dr Murat Uysal was assigned as a Technical Editor. It is expected that this standard will be finalized as of the end of 2017.
