Professor Putnam specializes in social development. He teaches a survey course in child development, a lab in developmental research methods, introduction to psychology, and a seminar in social development. His research interests involve exploring interactions between nature and nurture in the development of sensation seeking, negative emotionality, and attentional control.

Dr. Kathleen M. Rudasill’s research is directed toward understanding how children’s individual differences, particularly in temperament, are related to academic and social success, and how this relationship is moderated and mediated by classroom processes. This research is designed to gain insight into how specific classroom processes, such as student-teacher interactions, may facilitate or hinder success for students with particular temperamental characteristics.

Dr. Julia C. Torquati,

Dr. Torquati conducts research on the role of teachers’ attachment security and reflective function on the quality of teacher-child relationships, and the influence of natural environments on children’s development. Current research projects focus on young children’s environmental moral reasoning and sociomoral reasoning; the effectiveness of nature walks (compared to urban walks) for restoring attention and cognitive function among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; and pre-service teachers’ preparation for working with infants, toddlers, and their families.  Dr. Torquati teaches classes on parent-child relationships, children’s social processes, and child development.

Dr. Masha Garstein,

Dr. Gartstein’s research addresses temperament development, primarily in early childhood. The emphasis on identifying typical trajectories of growth for reactive and regulatory tendencies is coupled with efforts to discern risk and protective factors relevant to the emergence of psychopathology.  Dr. Gartstein has examined a spectrum of environmental factors contributing to temperament attributes “coming online”, including parental temperament, parenting/parent-child interactions, and cultural influences.
