About us

Dr. Touraj ASHRAFIAN received his “M.SC. in Architecture” degree from I. Azad University of Tabriz in 2006. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Building Science from Istanbul Technical University in 2016. His Ph.D. thesis title was “A New Approach to Define Economically Applicable Energy Efficient Retrofit Solutions for Residential Buildings in Turkey.” He is mainly focused on Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB), cost-optimality analysis, building energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), existing buildings’ energy efficient renovation and cost analysis of related actions to implement step-by-step and low initial investment cost renovation methods in the framework of recast-EPBD to Turkey’s economic, social and climatic conditions. He was one of the main researchers in two national research projects named “Determination of Turkish Reference Buildings and National Method for Defining Cost Optimum Energy Efficiency Level of Buildings” and “Establishment of infrastructure and practical standard for ecological settlement units’ transformation of the regions under ecological disaster risks in Kocakır region of Eskişehir” supported by the “TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey)” and the “Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning of Turkey” respectively.

Furthermore, he has more than 14 years’ work experience in Architectural design and Built-Environment Science until 2016. Between 2002 and 2011, he was working as a chief atelier and principal researcher in two different engineering consultant companies and during this period he designed and involved in more than 200 construction projects. Between 2011 and 2016, he involved in three different academic research projects. During this period, he participated in some LEED and BREEAM projects as well. Before joining to Özyeğin University, as a lecturer and instructor in three public and private universities, he led courses and conducted lectures in the field of building physics, architecture, and computer-aided design. Moreover, he is a reviewer in the journal of “Energy and Buildings” and wrote some journal articles and several conference papers and attended to several courses in the field of building energy efficiency and Indoor Environmental Quality.

Dr. Neşe Ganiç Sağlam, graduated as an architect from Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Faculty of Architecture. She received her M.Sc. degree from Environmental Control and Construction Technologies Program in 2012 and Ph.D. degree from Construction Sciences Program in 2017 at the same university with her studies on building energy efficiency and energy retrofits. Her Ph.D. study was awarded as
the Most Successful Thesis Study by the university. Supported by scholarships for six months between 2011 and 2012 and for one year between 2016 and 2017, she conducted her research activities in Politecnico di Torino Department of Energy. She worked as a Research
Assistant in ITU Faculty of Architecture between years 2011 and 2017 and involved in several research projects and has national and international publications on cost-effective energy efficiency in buildings, nearly zero energy buildings and green building certification systems. Since 2018, she has been working as an Assistant Professor in Ozyegin University Faculty of Architecture and Design. She is a board member of both IBPSA Turkey (the International Building Performance Simulation Association-Turkish Affiliation) and International
Association of Building Physics (IABP). She is a member of Turkish Society of HVAC and Sanitary Engineers (TTMD) and a corresponding member of Technology and Research Committee of REHVA (Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations). She is co-director of the Building Materials and Physics Laboratory of Ozyegin University.

Dr. Ece Kalaycıoğlu Özdemir, completed her B.Sc. degree in the Department of Architecture of Istanbul Technical University in 2007. She started her M.Sc. studies in the same university and between 2008 and 2009, she completed thesis research about building performance directives and energy certification systems in Politecnico di Torino. She obtained her M.Sc. degree in 2010. Finally, in 2017 she completed her Ph.D. at Istanbul Technical University. Between 2009 and 2017, she worked in EKOMIM Ecological Architectural Consultancy firm, where she worked in various projects and had the responsibility to analyse and increase the building energy performance, to examine the architectural and mechanical systems via detailed dynamic simulations and to develop feasibility reports for energy efficiency investments in buildings. Beginning from September 2017, she works as a lecturer at Özyeğin University and teaches the Built Environmental Control Studio Courses. She is a board member of both IBPSA Turkey (the International Building Performance Simulation Association-Turkish Affiliation) and she is a member of the Turkish Society of HVAC and Sanitary Engineers (TTMD) External Relations Committee. Her areas of specialty are building energy performance, lighting, and daylighting performance modeling and simulations, energy-efficient and sustainable architectural design development, thermal and visual comfort analyses, zero/nearly zero energy/carbon building design, renewable energy systems and district energy systems. She is co-director of the Building Materials and Physics Laboratory of ÖzyeĞin University.
